I am an old camper from way back. I read this book (on Kindle) for old time's sake and to just see what he had to say about camping. This is a good book. It is pretty much aimed at people starting out. He didn't pass edicts, but gave advice. People can choose to follow the advice or not, whatever works for each person is what works. I believe in picking up what is useful to me and simply not using the advice I don't need. I eat how I eat while camping and do it entirely different from how he does. But his way is valid and someone starting out can pick up some very useful tips in that section.
I found some of the advice quite helpful, like how to tie down a corner that broke away from the stake. Very simple, but I never had thought of that myself!
As I was reading this, some things I really agreed with, some things were not applicable to how I personally camp, but even for me, there were some things I picked up that I may try if I am able to pick up my camping hobby again someday.
He covers sleeping issues. That's a biggie when camping. Read what he says and think on that, and think on any options that come to your mind.
Camping isn't something that can be done by a chart or one book. But this book gives advice to launch out into developing one's very own camping style, plus things even us ol' die hard campers can use. Gotta start someplace! And he's big on comfort. And that's a good thing!

The Art of Tent Camping Russ Steffy 9781466231504 Books Reviews
If new or a every other year camper. This is a very practial book by someone who lists the mistakes they made and overcome to make camping enjoyable for all in the family
No too many new things
Great Book. Good read
At the time of my read this book gave me the basics. Afterwards I read many others from assorted authors. If you're looking for a brief read for the fundamentals this book may meet those needs.
There's quite a bit of information in this book that you may already know, but when out tenting/camping may have forgot or just didn't think of. Keep it handy to brush up on your knowledge of the joy's you can have with just a plain old ordinary tent.Leave the "Glamping" to those less fortunate.
Despite some typos, this presented good, basic camping information. Too bad, Russ, you can't teach more on common sense. It's not as common as it used to be. But I do wonder if the Forest Service approves of your recommendations on trenches. You said not a single word on filling them back in! Dad is/was/always will be a Boy Scout and we were required to leave the site better than when we arrived, even if we were only picnicking. Also the author is based in California, camping in Tornado Country requires more weather knowledge to ensure safety.
Okay, I needed something to read while the wife was shopping, and I had her old Gen 1 (Whispernet doesn't work at our house, since we're too close to the cell tower), so I clicked and downloaded this li'l tome for a quick read. I always loved reading Boy Scout manuals and that sort of thing and this was a nice version of one of those, without the jingoism and dogma, of course.
Mr. Steffy is pretty knowledgeable about the subject and manages to write this how-to guide in a very easy-to-read and understandable way. There is a LOT of good advice and information in here on camping - a lot of things I would've never considered (and they sure as hell never mentioned to us in Scouts). Definitely worth a read for any camper of any skill level, as I think there are a lot of little tricks in here that could be of use to anyone out there in the wild.
